Training - Basic Radio Functions

Below are the common features/functions that every prepared citizen should have practice with performing on their particular radio.

Antenna Connection Ensure proper antenna attachment for signal
Backlight Adjust how long before screen shuts off
Battery Check Monitor battery level or replace/recharge
Channel Selection Switch between pre-programmed channels/frequencies
Connector Type Kenwood 2-pin, Motorola M3 pin, other
Dual Watch Change between A/B
Frequency Tuning / FPP (Front Panel Programming) Manually set or fine-tune a frequency
Frequency/Channel Display Toggle the display of frequency or channel name (if saved)
Lock Keypad Prevent accidental changes to settings, channel switching, etc
Mode Selection Switch between FM, AM, or digital modes
Monitor Function Listen for weak signals by disabling squelch
Power On/Off Turn the radio on and off
PTT (Push-to-Talk) Activate the microphone to transmit
RX/TX Light Enable/disable screen light coming on when RX/TX
Scan Channels Automatically search for active frequencies
Screen Brightness Adjust how dim/bright the screen is
Squelch Adjustment Suppress background noise for clear reception
Switch Zone/Group Switch between pre-programmed sets of frequencies e.g. GMRS, MURS
Transmit Power Adjust between high/low power for range or battery saving
VFO Mode Easy frequency tuning mode for adhoc
Volume Control Adjust the audio output level up and down
VOX (Voice Activation) Enable hands-free transmission
