Training - Scenario 6: Quick Reaction Force Defending Local Farm

Scenario 6: Quick Reaction Force Defending Local Farm

Setting

  • A local farm near a wooded logging road in a national forest, at dusk
  • The farm includes barns, fields, and some forest cover around the perimeter

Background

A small farm in the area is under attack by two armed individuals believed to be part of a local gang, attempting to steal livestock or supplies. Your Quick Reaction Force (QRF) team, now consisting of four men, is dispatched to protect the farm, secure the property, and neutralize the threat.

Team Setup

Quick Reaction Force

  1. Team Leader (TL): Oversees operations, coordinates via radio with local law enforcement
  2. Point Man (PM): Leads the approach, key for early threat detection
  3. Rear Security (RS): Guards against threats from the rear
  4. Medic (M): Equipped with MARCH medical training for any injuries

Opposition Force (OPFOR)

  1. OPFOR 1: Acts aggressively, trying to break into the barns to steal
  2. OPFOR 2: Serves as a lookout, possibly with limited weaponry, positioned in a tree line for vantage

Objectives

Team Objective

Defend the Farm: Prevent the theft or damage of farm assets, using tactical formations and immediate action drills to counter the attack.

Individual Objectives

  1. TL: Maintain effective radio communication, coordinate team actions, and call for backup if necessary
  2. Medic: Be ready for immediate medical intervention, focusing on both team and farm residents if needed

Exercise Details

Deployment

The QRF team approaches in a file formation along the logging road, transitioning to a staggered column as they near the farm for better visibility and control.

First Contact

Noise from the farm alerts PM to OPFOR 1 trying to force entry into a barn. The team quickly shifts to a diamond formation to prepare for engagement.

Engagement with OPFOR

PM and RS move to intercept OPFOR 1, while TL coordinates the team's actions. TL radios, "Contact at the barn, engaging."

Radio Communication

TL updates the team, "Watch for the lookout, possible sniper in the trees." They use their night vision to scan the tree line.

Handling the Lookout

OPFOR 2, the lookout, attempts to provide cover fire for OPFOR 1. M and TL work together to locate and neutralize this threat, ensuring the team's safety from behind cover.

Resolution

With OPFOR 1 apprehended or neutralized, and the lookout dealt with, the QRF secures the farm. TL requests local law enforcement for detainment and further investigation.

Post-Action

The team assesses any damage or injuries, with the Medic assisting any farm residents or team members in need.

Debrief

  1. Discuss the effectiveness of the formations in a defense scenario
  2. Review communication under stress, especially with limited manpower
  3. Analyze the tactical approach to dealing with fewer numbers but potentially more aggressive and determined opposition

This exercise focuses on the QRF's ability to respond quickly and effectively with reduced numbers, emphasizing strategic positioning, communication, and the protection of civilian assets against a determined but smaller adversary force.
